Ice cream scoop buying guide 2019

There's nothing quite like a bowl of nice cold ice cream on a hot summers day, or even a cold winters night - we're not fussy! But if there's one thing that can dampen the mood unlike any other it's not being able to prise ice cream from the tub. The perfect ice cream scoop should be able to get the job done in one go, and not leave you sweating with tired wrists.

Dishwasher safe

Believe it or not, not all scoops are dishwasher safe. This can be for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the coating on the scoop might not be able to handle the sustained temperatures found in the dishwasher. Secondly, some scoops come with special anti-freeze gel inside the scoop. If this gets too hot it will be destroyed. Best case is that your scoop will stop scooping as effectively, worst case is that it leaks inside your dishwasher.

Soft grip handle

It can be hard word extracting frozen ice cream from the tub. A soft grip handle absorbs some of the pressure you're putting on the scoop, meaning you won't hurt your hands as much. A soft grip handle won't transfer the cold to your skin as much as a metal handle either.

Length

A longer ice cream scoop will generally perform better than a short one, as you can put more force and leverage into the scooping motion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I warm up my ice cream scoop before using it?

Running your scoop under the hot water tap usually helps, especially if your ice cream is especially cold. Do not put your scoop in the microwave to warm it up!

How do I clean my non-dishwasher safe scoop?

Scoops that aren't safe to put in the dishwasher need to be washed under the tap in lukewarm water. For the same reason you can't wash it in the dishwasher (the water is too hot), you need to make sure you don't wash it in too hot water out of the dishwasher.

What else can I scoop with an ice cream scooper?

All ice cream scoops will work just as well with other frozen deserts, like sorbet, cookie dough or yoghurt. You can also use it on softer foods if you need to create a perfect spherical shape. For example you might want to try it when shaping meatballs, burgers (flatten after scooping), or dumplings.
